Tristan

I received a summons for Arthur.

That wasn’t completely unusual, but I was in bed and asleep when the messenger began knocking on my door. Izzy stirred, but didn’t wake. I looked at his peaceful features, brushed back a lock of his hair, and got out of bed.

I answered the door half asleep, but did my best to wake when I understood what was happening. I assured the messenger that I’d be at the castle in just a few minutes, closed the door, and dressed as rapidly as possible.

“What’s going on?” Izzy asked from our bed.

“Arthur sent someone for me,” I answered.

Izzy sat straight up in bed with wide eyes.

“Don’t worry,” I assured him. “Camelot is in no danger. Arthur and Merlin could never be fooled twice in a row.”

“It’s just that…” Izzy stumbled.

“Tell me,” I encouraged.

“Things feel different here,” Izzy said. “There’s a feeling of dread hanging over Camelot. Can’t you feel it?”

“Of course I feel it,” I said, “but we’ve just been attacked. It’s only natural to feel off-balance.”

“It’s not that,” Izzy said. “It was there before the attack. Something horrible is coming. This final battle, I’m really worried.”

I climbed back into bed, embraced my love, and only took my leave after he fell back asleep in my arms.

I lived just off to the side of the drawbridge. I could have lived in the castle, but I enjoy a bit of privacy when I’m not out fighting evil things. The evening was cool with a heavy amount of dew already forming on the trees and grass.

Once I was on the drawbridge, I looked towards the river. In spots, the water was still burning, but other than that, there wasn’t a single sign of the violence that had taken place earlier.

In the middle of the bridge, I saw a young woman in white gazing at the stars. Her feet were wet enough to leave footprints on the surface of the bridge.

“Best get dried off, my dear,” I said as I passed her by. “You wouldn’t want to catch a cold.”

The woman gazed at me dreamily from beneath her hood, and for some reason I stopped.

“Are you okay?” I asked.

“No,” the young woman answered. “I’m not okay.”

I took a few steps closer, and the woman turned her face away from me.

“Is there anything I can do for you?” I asked.

“Be brave,” the woman answered. “Be brave and be careful. Maybe you don’t know this, but you’re one of the best of them. Your heart is truly pure.”

I took another step closer.

“I’m not sure what you’re talking about,” I said. “Do we know each other?”

“You don’t know me,” the woman said. “You can’t know me. I keep my distance. It’s better that way.”

The woman’s hair was dripping water underneath her hood. It was subtle, but I could see it clearly in the moonlight.

“Who are you?” I asked.

I did not at any point feel threatened by the young woman. That was the furthest sort of thought from my mind. Instead, I felt a wonderful curiosity and a little bit of sadness.
